STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE

7 Steps

Prepare Two Clips

You need: • A clean plate (empty shot) • A clip with your subject walking in Important: Make sure the camera is completely stable in both shots. No camera movement.

Arrange the Clips Properly

Go to the subject clip. Move back five frames from the point where the subject first appears. Place: Clean plate first Subject clip second (on top layer) Proper timing is critical for a smooth flicker.

Use Magic Mask

Go to the Color tab. Select the subject clip. Open Magic Mask. Set quality to Better. Draw over the subject. Now click: Track Forward Track Backward This ensures the mask follows the subject.

Add Alpha Output

In the Color tab: Right-click in the node area → Add Alpha Output. Connect your node to the Alpha Output. Now your subject is properly cut out.

Render In Place

Go back to the Edit tab. Right-click the subject clip. Select Render In Place. Settings: Format: DNxHR Bit Depth: 16-bit Enable: Render at Source Resolution Click Render. This locks the Magic Mask so it doesn’t break if the clip is edited later.

Create the Flicker Effect

Select the rendered subject clip. Add a cut on every single frame. You can use: Blade Tool Now delete every alternate frame. This creates the flicker reveal effect.

(Optional): Add Color Flicker

For a stylized look: Go to Effects. Search for Color Generator. Apply it to the remaining flicker frames. Now you have a colored flicker reveal effect.
